TEAM HISTORY
The Oklahoma Sooners are one of college football’s elite programs. The Sooners are 6th all-time in wins and winning percentage. They claim 7 national titles, which by Bama math would equate to 17 national titles and 7 Heisman trophy winners. Coaches’ names like Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer, and Bob Stoops have helmed the Sooners.
If you don’t know anything about the Oklahoma Sooners, then you probably haven’t been following college football for very long.
SERIES HISTORY
Auburn has played Oklahoma three times. Two contests occurred in the Sugar Bowl, and of course, last year’s contest at Jordan-Hare.
The first game was the 1972 Sugar Bowl featuring the 3rd-ranked Sooners and the 5th-ranked Tigers. I can’t say it was the first televised Auburn game, but my dad claims this was the first time he ever watched Auburn play on TV.
Auburn was the SEC runner-up thanks to a loss against Alabama, but Coach Jordan had Heisman-winning QB Pat Sullivan at the helm. We got beat like a drum, 44-22.
The second matchup came again in the Sugar Bowl in 2017. Remember, this wasn’t your or my dad’s Sugar Bowl. This was the year that the Peach Bowl and Sugar Bowl essentially swapped places thanks to the College Football Playoff format.
Auburn lost one of the most winnable games in Athens that year, where if Sean White NEVER THROWS A PASS then we win. It’s top 3 in the most infuriating losses of my lifetime. Auburn then finished out the season with a close halftime score against the Tide, but ultimately ended up losing the Iron Bowl. We essentially lost our way into the Sugar Bowl in 2017.
Anyway, back to the 2017 game. Joe Mixon punched a woman. Brent Musburger, as expected, said questionable things. We got throttled 35-19 and scored a late TD to make the score seem a little better than it actually was.
Last year’s matchup was one in which Auburn looked like the team we had hoped all season they would be. Payton Thorne’s stat line looked solid (21-32, 338 yards, 3 TDs & 1 INT). That 1 INT, though, would ultimately seal the deal.
And with all of that, Auburn has still never beaten Oklahoma.
WHAT TO WATCH
I’m afraid the key area to watch is our defense. Oklahoma averages over 33 points per game. Granted, the only team they’ve played with a pulse was a Top-25 Michigan.
Auburn’s defense must find a way to take John Mateer out of the game. Get into his head and force errors while containing him from racking up rushing yardage.
PREDICTION
I want us to win. I believe we will win. I’M MANIFESTING THIS VICTORY!
