It’s a silly thing to say, but Auburn is the best 2-3 team on the planet. It doesn’t mean anything. It just means that Auburn is 10 or less points and probably a turnover or 2 from 5-0. Everybody knows it. I know it’s not real life. Auburn is 2-3.
But Auburn doesn’t suck. They ain’t trash, bruh.
Auburn currently takes the field with the 23rd best offense in the nation. They also employ the 50th best defense in the nation. Both of these are in terms of total offense and total defense. This is the first time Auburn could boast these two things since 2019, when Auburn was a Top 10 team.
Again, stats don’t win games, but stats can be very telling or sometimes more telling about what type of team you have over a 6, 7, or even 10 point loss. The stat that has caused those losses is obviously the turnovers.
I’ve said for weeks now that the law of averages would end up showing up. There was no way that Auburn was going to have another 5 turnover game. Well, they had a 1 turnover game last week and it was detrimental enough to turn the game over, but the law of averages did show up.
For the first time this season, Auburn will now go on the road to face an opponent. Oh, and it just happens to be Georgia, in the middle of the season, which still isn’t right. Fix it, Greg Sankey.
The Bulldogs are coming off their first loss of the season, a near come-from-behind win against the Tide in Tuscaloosa. They were absolutely destroyed for the first half, then Alabama let up and slowly lets the Dawgs get back in it. Despite throwing 3, WHAT 3 INTERCEPTIONS, Georgia’s quarterback led a comeback, and actually took the lead. But the 17-year-old, DID YOU KNOW HE IS 17, had other plans and got the lead back.
So here’s the deal: Georgia is not nearly as good as they have been in past years. They got down 28 points and were only able to come back since Alabama let their foot off the gas as if the game was over. But then a 17-year-old was too much for the Dawgs. So they can’t even beat a 17 year old? Pitiful. And Alabama thinks games are over at halftime? Double pitiful.
But really, Georgia is not the juggernaut they have been the last few years. Auburn is not near as bad as their record and simpleton logic looks. Every Oklahoma coach, player, and fan said the same. The talent, the yardage, the defense is there. There have just been a few mistakes and a lot of bad luck.
Winning in Athens is hard. Auburn has not done it since 2006 when even that took a miracle from Brandon Cox to Devin Aromashodu. Better Auburn teams have lost to not as good Georgia teams. It’s just tough.
But Auburn has shown that should be 5-0. They’ve shown that it’s better than it seems. Georgia has shown they can struggle against Kentucky and get in 28-0 holes against teams that struggled to put away South Florida.
Payton Thorne will play like he did last week, but better decisions will be made in tough situations. The Auburn defense will continue Georgia’s turnover issue. Auburn’s kickers will find the middle of the goal posts again.
Thorne throws for one and runs for one. Jarquez runs a long one and a short one in. Auburn breaks the streak. Georgia starts a downward spiral for the rest of the season.
Auburn 31, Georgia 21
