Vanderbilt Review: It Happened Again

Well that didn’t last long. It’s another post-loss review. It was fun while it lasted.

I truly don’t know how it’s possible, but Auburn didn’t play particularly terrible and lost another game against a team they should beat by 2+ touchdowns.

Auburn outgained the Commodores by 100 yards. They moved the ball. They weren’t overly penalized (on the offensive side of the ball). They didn’t turn the ball over until the last drive when Fairweather had the ball ripped out in a drive that wouldn’t have mattered.

But Auburn somehow found a way to not score a touchdown after crossing midfield multiple times. In fact, they never got inside the redzone. The one touchdown was from around the 30-yard line.

And then when they got to the point of at least getting some points out of stalled drives, the kicker couldn’t make a kick. Maybe he wasn’t expecting this much work this season with McPherson still on the roster. Maybe it’s the yips. But kicks aren’t being made and it’s killing drives, killing momentum, and killing the vibe. Auburn hasn’t missed this many kicks in my lifetime. It isn’t all on that, but if that’s your job, then maybe they should get as much criticism as another guy that gets killed for one bad throw out of ten.

The defense played their best game of the season. It may have been the best defensive performance in five years. Diego Pavia was scoring points all over the place and was supposed to come in and be a major threat.

He did nothing and had literally nothing to do with Vanderbilt’s win, despite what his mouth and his flex after a 2-yard run tells you.

Yet, that same defense were called for multiple drive-extending penalties when Auburn’s offense was going to have at least 2-3 more chances to get more points on the board. It’s hard to blame the defense for anything, but still…

Anyway, Auburn lost yet another winnable game. It was slow and boring and slightly depressing, but I’m not sure why and how you continue to get to new levels of mad with each loss.

This is the season. We, or somebody, is paying for something. Just get through it. Hope we win. Understand at this point if we don’t.

Let’s take this week off and figure out a way to win some of the next three games.
