Southern Miss Things and Other Auburn Connections

FootballOpponent ThingsThe First Look

Maybe one day we’ll get @JackTheRabbit to write another The First Look, but in the meantime, in this new age of Blogle, let’s do something simple and fun. Here are some quirky things about Southern Miss and then some Southern-Miss/Auburn connections. Who needs defensive back analysis? Not me.

🦅 Southern Miss Things

⚔️ They were almost named the Southern Miss War Lords.
When Southern Miss picked a new mascot in 1972, War Lords was one of the finalists before Golden Eagles won out. War Lords… Golden Eagles… War Eagles?

🦅 Their mascot is named Seymour d’Campus.
According to the Southern Miss website, the name was inspired by Seymour d’Fair, the mascot of the 1984 World’s Fair. Ok? I guess it’s better than Seymour Butts?

🏃 Their “First Flight” looks very Baylor-ish.
New Southern Miss students run onto the field before home games — which in an interesting tactic since this is exactly what Baylor does and Auburn keeps beating Baylor, so yeah. But it’s not the only thing they’ve copied because…

🚶 Eagle Walk is basically Tiger Walk.
Southern Miss has its own pregame walk where fans line the street as the team heads to the stadium. I feel like I’ve seen that before.

🦵 Ray Guy, the punter, might’ve been the best football player ever.
You know the guy they named the best punter award after? He played at Southern Miss where he punted, kicked field goals, played safety and backup quarterback, intercepted 18 passes, and once hit a 93-yard punt. Why do we call it the Heisman?

🐅 Auburn Connections

🔁 Laquan Robinson went from Auburn to Southern Miss.
Defensive back Laquan Robinson appeared in four games for the Tigers in 2024, spent 2025 at Kansas, and is now on the Southern Miss roster. I think I remember him.

🏈 Kodi Burns has already played against Southern Miss.
As one of Auburn’s two quarterbacks in 2008, Kodi scored a rushing touchdown in a 27-13 win over the Golden Eagles. But don’t look up his passing line.

📋 Alex Golesh has beaten Southern Miss before.
Golesh’s South Florida beat Southern Miss 49-24 in Hattiesburg in 2024. South Florida trailed 14-0 early, then outscored the Golden Eagles 49-10 the rest of the way. I’d rather it be easier this time.

🤏 Southern Miss and Brett Favre beat Auburn by one point two years in a row.
The Golden Eagles won 13-12 at Jordan-Hare in 1990, then returned in 1991 and did it again, 10-9. Against Pat Dye. But Brett Favre ain’t walkin’ thru that door.

😬 That 1990 Southern Miss team beat Alabama too.
Before beating Auburn that year, Southern Miss won 27-24 in Birmingham (Alabama’s home field). Does that make it better?
