From the Other Sideline – Arkansas

Flint Harris (@Flint_HolyTurf) is an Arkansas graduate that used to run and write for HolyTurf.com, a site all about the passion of college football, specifically the SEC and Big 12. He now owns Bliss Cupcake Cafe with his wife and teaches business classes in the Walton College of Business at Arkansas. Flint has been a staple of the Arkansas Other Sidelines, as this is his eleventy-billionth time on the Blogle.

1. What is an Arkansas fan’s first thoughts of Auburn football right now?

A little surprised Hugh has not made y’all better quicker. Is that how y’all feel?

2. Are you tired of Sam Pittman yet?

Yes! He is in over his skis. We are tired of losing.

3. It seems that when Auburn beats Arkansas it’s always by 1000+ points. Why is that?

We call this recency bias. I’ll give you last year was a disaster, but two years ago we won in JH 41-27, 2021 was a 38-23 Auburn win, and in 2020 we also won in JH. However, the refs were yet to complete their freshman level officiating class where questions like, “Is a ball thrown backwards a pass or lateral’ and ‘if a player jumps on top of a fumble as soon as it happens, is this considered immediate (hint, the answer is yes).’ But 2016-2019 were indeed whippings by Auburn by an average score of 48-9…gosh, that is rough. Thanks for making me relive it.

4. What’s the vibe like in Fayetteville after the loss at Stillwater and close win over UAB?

Had the Hogs whipped UAB, fans would be more optimistic after dominating Oklahoma State everywhere but the scoreboard. However, watching the defense struggle to get a stop in the first half combined with Taylen Green and his WRs playing poorly didn’t help.

5. Name two current Auburn Tigers that scare you and why?

Well, I’m pretty bummed Freeze went to Brown last week. I know Thorne played well against us last year, but he eventually has to regress to the mean against the Hogs. Jarquez Hunter is still at Auburn? Does he have a master’s degree yet? He is averaging almost eight yards a carry.

6. Name two Arkansas Razorbacks that we may not know about it that we should keep our eye on.

Our QB Taylen Green is a rollercoaster. The Boise State transfer can hurt you with his legs. His passing is erratic at best. I bet Auburn uses a spy on him. Make him beat you with his arm. Landon Jackson, #40, is an LSU transfer playing DE. He is an All-SEC caliber player who can wreck an offense.

7. Where will each team have an advantage over the other?

Arkansas’ biggest advantage is Bobby Petrino at OC. He is still elite at scheming plays to get guys open. Our offense is so much better than the last few years. The question is can we execute. Auburn’s advantage is twofold: 1. you are playing at home, which should help. 2. Your players have more experience finding ways to win games. Arkansas has players finding ways to lose games.

8. Are you glad KJ Jefferson is playing for Arkansas’s favored son, Gus Malzahn, or do you wish he had stayed in Fayetteville?

Arkansas fans are thankful for KJ. It was probably time for him to move on, so seeing him at UCF (great win at TCU last weekend) makes him fairly easy to root for. As I have said before in this column of late, we are so worried about trying to win a few ball games, that we have little energy to get angry with other teams and coaches.

9. What’s your prediction for the game, and where will the Tigers and Hawgs end up this season?

I know Auburn isn’t great right now, but I believe they will win. Perhaps not a blowout. Arkansas has enough talent to win. I’m not sure we have the ability to execute at a high level or the mindset to walk away victorious. I’ll say Auburn 34-24.

10. Lastly, talk about Bobby Petrino.

I’ve talked to several people in and around the Arkansas football program who overwhelmingly say he is a different person. He is easier to work with now. His ability to coach an offense is second to none in college football. Please keep the Auburn volleyball team away from him this weekend. And if Pittman gets fired before the season is over, keep an eye on Bobby!
