As a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), Auburn is never far away from the headlines when it comes to athletics and sports. The football team might be the most recognizable to fans, but the school is represented in a wide range of different sports and has a long and proud history.
We thought some insight on Auburn might be of use to places such as the California sportsbooks, to all the Wisconsin betting fans. Auburn might be the pride of Alabama, but it is loved throughout the country, so here’s some information on the range of sports played by Tigers.
Tigers Football
Although football has always been something that Auburn has been well known for, 2021 turned into a disappointment, as the Tigers fell away at the end of the season. The Iron Bowl was lost to Alabama and then Houston beat Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl just before the end of the year.
Auburn last won the National Championship in 2010 but that 6-7 record last year was the first time the Tigers had dipped below .500 since 2012. Cam Newton is still the most recognizable of all Auburn alumni and he will be among thousands of others hoping that the Tigers can deliver on the field in 2022.
Basketball
Head coach Bruce Pearl will be starting his eighth season at Auburn later this year and there will be high hopes that he can continue the development that has seen the Tigers make a name for themselves on the national picture. The SEC was won again last year and repeating that will be the first priority.
Going further than the second round at the NCAA Tournament will be next on the list though. Pearl took Auburn to the Final Four for the first time ever in 2019 and he will be demanding a swift return to the top table in college hoops.
Swimming
Football and basketball may get a lot of attention when it comes to college sports. But it is in the swimming pool that Auburn has enjoyed the most success over the years. The 2000s were the glory days for the Tigers, with seven of the eight men’s NCAA Championships being won between 1999 and 2009. That was in addition to the five won by the women in the same period.
But there has been something of a transition period after the Coach Quick era – and the time Brett Hawke spent as head coach. Last year was particularly disappointing, with neither of the men’s or women’s teams winning any points at all at the NCAA Championships.
Women’s Soccer
Soccer was added to the athletics program in 1993 and, after a shaky start, has provided Auburn with another sports team to be proud of. The Tigers are regular challengers in a very competitive SEC and actually won four straight conference titles in the 2000s.
Last season saw an early exit in the NCAA Division I Women’s Tournament, losing 2-0 at home to Samford. But with the recent news of sophomore Anna Haddock being called up to the U-23 women’s youth national team, things seem to be looking up for Tigers soccer.
Other Sports at Auburn
They may not always make the nightly sports shows but there are plenty more athletes representing Auburn on the national stage in a range of NCAA competitions and tournaments.
Baseball and softball are popular, as is golf for both men and women. Track and field has brought Auburn the only other national championship to date – when the women won the outdoor title in 2006.
Auburn is known as one of the most prestigious schools in the country and a big name in the world of college sports. Hopefully we will be celebrating more championships this year.
